Thailand in Postmodern era

Growing up in Thailand and the United States and often shifts geographical locations.  I’ve been a transplant back in Bangkok and witness the social shifted.  Thailand has entered the postmodern era without ever experienced being modern.   Agriculture is the foundation of Thailand’s system and resources. In a sense modernity has begun around 1900s-20s but was never introduced to Thailand until 1940s-50s.  The socio-cultural in Thailand was somewhat primitive comparing to the modern culture.  Therefore, Thai society has been consuming without really ever learning how to properly produce modern and postmodern commodities.

Yet, the Thai society abandoned classical goods and stare at it in despised.  Praising luxurious import products that are priced at skyrocket high.  As, the globalization phenomenon is cropping up, the super materialistic society has become the hyper-elite circle.  Building up trends and influenced, middle and lower class affected, into a materialistic monstrous communities looking for ways to putting themselves into a higher class hoping to present themselves  to be recognize as the upper of the social hierarchy and veiling their ignorance of the modern world behind façade of commodities.   Jumping on the bandwagon, hoping to be perceived as the elite and rich in cultural.

Similarly, some took another justification and focus on exhibiting ownership of the import products.  Placing exchange value before functioning value then build up sentimental value around pure objects.  As following the global trend, citizen of Thailand are slowly losing their identity as the consuming mania are merely buying but never really learn how to properly domestically manualfactured.  This resulting in unbalance economy.
